Thanks! I see now what your saying. It was much like I was looking at
doing. I am used to single SMTP and the Exchange 2007 thing has made it
difficult to wrap my thin king around. I just need to think of them in a
single SMTP view.

you are completely missing  the point; ASSP and the IIS
SMTP (assuming your ASSP is running on a Windows 
box) will be running on the same, separate box and by
separate I mean a box different from the one on which
your Exchange is running (or even a VM for that)

Exchange will just receive the incoming emails from the
ASSP box and will use the same box as smarthost; that's
all, nothing more or less; give up the "connectors" and all
the other "exchangish" stuff; that won't help you here :-)
we're just talking plain vanilla SMTP :D
