I found upgrading from 1.2.6 to 1.3.1 to be relatively painless and it's the version I am still using both at work and at home. There are a few new options but nothing broke and the defaults work fine. To go to 1.3.3.8 may pose a few more problems. I'd say if you need to use 1.3.3.8 it is still a good idea to go to 1.3.1 as an in between step.
