It depends how much virtual memory you have. And if anything is actually 
running out of memory. Assuming you use linux, normally when the kernel 
is running out of memory and virtual memory is filled up to it will 
start killing programs. I am not sure what decision making it uses, but 
it will kill useless stuff like firefox sooner than say sysklogd. So 
instead of ASSP freezing due to out of memory it would "mysteriously" 
stop running.

I have experienced this behaviour in practice many times when I tortured 
myself with running linux on a Commodore Amiga as well as just because I 
was being stingy with regards to buying more memory. ;-)
