Our mail server software lets us automatically purge messages older then 
a preset period of time.  Set spam messages to expire after a week or 
so.  No problem.  This works as well on a global spam folder that is 
managed only by the email administrator.

Your opinion, but I think this is where we come in. :o)  If they can't 
figure it out but are missing an email, I can find it for them and move 
it into their main mailbox for delivery via pop.  "In practice" this has 
been working very well for our company email which supports >400 users.
