What you are missing is that fault tolerance is already built into the
SMTP protocol.

If your server is down temporarily, messages will be queued up by the
*senders* server, and will be retried later, sometimes within minutes,
usually no longer than an hour or two.

The only time that a secondary MX should ever be considered that I can
think of is if your primary - or more usually, the internet connection
it sits on - is so unstable as to be prone to going down for *extended*
periods - and by extended, I mean for more than a day or two.

Otherwise, just let the smtp protocol do its job.
