I had a similar issue (albeit on version 1.7.5.1) when an smtp server was sending a message with too many headers (several lines of duplicate Content-Type and Content-Transfer-Encoding headers) on to ASSP.
Setting a limit on the header size (HeaderMaxLength) prevented the crash in my case.
