I'm doing this for similar reasons. I've been having issues with SSL on 
version 1, incoming SSL connections never seem to close correctly and 
the message keeps getting sent up 50 times.

I've also recently starting having an issue where if I send an email 
with attachment, Thunderbird will timeout even though the email itself 
goes through fine.
