I appreciate the advice and input. I don't suspect hardware just yet, since the mail server software runs on the same box and has no issues. However, since I have shutoff the HMM and still use MySQL for the spamdb, ASSP starts up in a few seconds without any delay. So I am going to leave HMM off for a few days and evaluate where things are. If my users are not seeing a spike in spam I may just leave HMM off and run with it.
If not, then I have a plan of action that I listed below.
