Terrance,

Unfortunately, this did not worked.  All it appeared to do was radically 
increase the size of the binary (12MiB vs. 1.7MiB), presumably from the 
incorporation of large amounts of debug code, but it did not statically link 
the libraries.  On moving the resulting binary to one of the problem servers 
and running it, it still reported that it could not load libiconv.  Bummer.

Thanks for the idea anyway.
