[ast-developers] Co-processes and subshells

Are coprocess file descriptors supposed to be inherited by subshells? I 
have the impression that they aren't:

$ bc|&
$ x=$(print -p '1+2')
-ksh: print: no query process [Bad file descriptor]

Bug or feature?
