I saw a report today that AST tr from ast-open 2010-07-01 on 64bit AMD64 does not grok German umlauts or other characters which are not singlebyte: printf 'ÖÄÜ\n' | ./tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]' This prints gibberish.
