It applies to more than colons, it's just the way to escape characters in
getopts that have special meaning in certain contexts. Duplicating a
character is a common alternative to backslashes or other notations (I've run
across it before in my travels). For example, consider this fragment of a
usage string:
usage="
...
[+EXAMPLES]{
[+tr '[A-Z]]' '[a-z]]'?Blah blah blah.]
...
}"
