As you can see by the discussion at http://tinyurl.com/ykqjlky, ksh 93s+ does not reliably detect when a child process has segfaulted. I think all the information you need is on the web site.
(Perhaps this bug is fixed in a later version; I get my ksh via the Debian distribution, so there is a time lag. If the bug has already been fixed, please let me know and I will file a report to Debian.)
