Assuming, by xgrep, you're searching an XML grep'er?
There's the GNU awk version which can be restricted
by a command line option to be strictly POSIX. And
there's the XML extension of GNU awk, xgawk, that
supports parsing of XML structures.
That's not AST, though. But why reinvent the wheel?
