Oh thank you very much.  It would have *never* occurred to me that this
was some sort of purposed feature!  I come from a long line of tradition
(including about 28 years using KSH) where we use the pound character
('#') to store commented-out lines in the history file, generally for
later recall and edit.  I can see that the world changed dramatically
somewhere and I was totally unsuspecting of it! :-)
