good question -- sorry for the lack of background info

"eksh" is the name an internal at&t group has given to ksh93
compiled with the SHOPT_AUDIT compile-time option enabled

SHOPT_AUDIT appends each executed command line (as it would appear
in the ksh history) to the file named by SHOPT_AUDITFILE
(SHOPT_AUDITFILE could be a physical file or /dev/tcp/... socket)

$KSH_VERSION has a sequence of [[:alpha:]] letters that signify
the SHOPT_* options enabled for the corresponding ksh

        A SHOPT_AUDIT
        B SHOPT_BASH
        J SHOPT_COSHELL
        j SHOPT_BGX
        L SHOPT_ACCT
        M SHOPT_MULTIBYTE
        P SHOPT_PFSH
        R SHOPT_REGRESS

the default is JM, as in

        Version JM 93u+ 2011-08-07
