Sorry for somewhat late response, but I just realized I never responded to
this.

You really don't need anything special for 'asterisk hosting', a server in
rackshack or servermatrix or any of discount dedicated hosts will serve
just fine to start, in fact, *cough* many of the "asterisk termination
providers" that are on the list do precisely that.

However, when you are serious about things, you start looking at
following:

a) Guarantees of uptime and hardware replacement: In mass-market dedicated
hosting companies, if your (say) power supply dies, it may be up to 24
hours for it to get replaced. Are you prepared to wait that long?

b) Support: Even if you don't expect to ever need support, it is a good
idea to purchase services from people who will be able to provide it to
you.

c) Network. While everyone nowaday has a good network, mass-market company
will not put a static route for you so your path to your most important
vendor or customer is better.

d) Internet vs Intranet: Nobody can guarantee any performance over the
public internet. However, if you are colocating / buying dedicated servers
from same company that is providing you with origination and termination,
there's no place to 'pass the buck'. One bill, one contact for issues,
better reliability. For example, our customers that have PRIs are
completely isolated from our IP network. Voice call comes into our switch,
our switch routes it to your PRI - no IP involved.
