On my computer, xten basically works well and better than Google Talk (which is noisy), but it is awful at controlling my sound card. Xten simply isn't able to provide continuous sound, but has small interrupts of a small fraction of a second very often. Skype and Google Talk don't have these problems, but other game-related voice programs do.
My guess is, that Google Talk and Skype are just better at handling my sound hardware configuration than xten. Lars.
