In my ATA there is an option "Suppress voice packets during RFC2833 Telephone Event packet transmission" Enabling this option fixes the dual DTMF issue.
If you are using G711 codec you could also disable RFC2833/SIP INFO DTMF which would cause asterisk to do the detection.
