So does Digium really want to say that if you take the GPL version of
asterisk you must go through and rename all references to iax, dundi,
digium and asterisk if you modifiy anything (or just add modules that
arent distributed with the digium codebase)?

this was the same question i asked before, with respect to FreeBSD porting of Asterisk, and i'm being optimistic when i think that for porting work to another open source operating system and complying with the GPL in all aspect, there really shouldn't be any restrictions.

commercially however, when people want to ship boxes with Asterisk preinstalled AND if you've made modifications to Asterisk (even while complying with the GPL), it would be safe to remove all references to Digium and Asterisk from it.

the reasons behind this, and these are MY opinions not anyone elses, are perhaps that the quality of the Asterisk product needs to be maintained by Digium. they, rightly, wouldn't want people saying Asterisk is of inferior quality when it crashes due to these modifications.
