Yes, it looks like you could assemble an alternative setup using xvfb instead of VNC server, which actually does a very similar thing. VNC's advantages are that (a) you can "visually tap into" each of its virtual screens for maintenence purposes, and (b) you can start up lots of simultaneous independent virtual screens, one for each Unix account (not a real limitation if you only want one Skype channel).

The good thing about both alternatives is that you avoid any potential hardware conflict problems (mentioned elsewhere in this thread) if you have Zap hardware in addition to ChanSkype, since you're not using any graphics hardware at all.

I'll freely admit I don't know much about xvfb, never having used it. Correct me if I said something wrong.
