You are very confused (tm).
Sweet sounds good so far!

PCI-X is fully compatible with standard PCI. PCI-X is a 64-bit extension. Any PCI card (with appropriate voltage) will fit in the PCI-X slot.
Ok, I had a standard PCI network card which I tried to put in the slot.
There was a line across the socket which didn't correspond to the gap
in the network card.
Correct, you had an old 5V PCI network card. Newer cards are universal: they have two gaps.

After reading the manual I assumed the socket is PCI-X.

It appears that it is not as a standard PCI card will not fit in this
socket.

Your problem is voltage. PCI-X is usually 3V. Your card is probably
5V. However, there are cards from both Digium and Sangoma that
support 3V. Get those.
Does this mean an extra space in the card?
yes
Yes, you should be fine. It is the PCI Express that I ran into with the newer HPs. OT, But AFAIK Digium does not make a half height nor a PCI Express compatible card at this point but Sangoma does. Again, I may be wrong.

Thanks,
Steve
