Its pretty much limited to data networks only... To allow wideband support to a PSTN gateway it would need to be resampled, and its not just the small hit of transcoding, half the data needs to be thrown away in one direction (essentially) and the data needs to be doubled in the other. Simply doubling the samples or throwing half away isn't gonna give you perfect results. I hope this explains it a little.
