Tim, as Matthew explained, it's about context.

When I say, "I'm gay", it's not meant as a pejorative.  When someone describes 
something as being "gay beyond words" or "totally gay", it is meant as a 
pejorative.  And given the history of this pejorative, its use is offensive and 
particularly rude for this or any Asterisk forum.
