Kevin, I'm a little confused here. Are you trying to build JUST an IM app? Are you trying to build a phone client with IM capability? If it's just IM, why use Asterisk to transmit the instant messages? Asterisk is a PBX first and foremost, so it's not really designed with IM in mind.
Are you somehow trying to integrate a phone user base and an IM user base? Honestly, I'm just guessing here, because I still don't fully get what it is you're trying to do. N.
