A majority of messages are exchanged via IP and a minority are via SS7. But
yes all carriers interconnect via SS7 however many also connect
simultaneously with SMPP for intercarrier routing.

The aggregator I work for does a couple hundred thousand via SS7 per day and
1.5 billion via IP using SMPP/UCP etc per day.
