Asterisk was never a particularly good LCR platform; the performance
just isn't there, especially given some developments in the race to the
bottom, which often require rapid serial forking through 15 vendors
before finding one that will actually terminate the call.
Nobody's making money terminating calls in wholesale, except in
supremely large volumes. There are still some retail opportunities, and
some niche wholesale markets. That's about it.
I should say: nobody's making money in domestic wholesale termination.
There are probably still plenty of opportunities (and risk) in
international, especially in places where VoIP "toll bypass" is still
some kind of novelty.
