Asterisk has a role to play in the Next Generation Intelligent Network
(NGIN) by providing a rich set of operations, which can be best performed by
a SIP agent operating as a Back-to-Back user agent.

The Intelligent Network (IN) market, operating on the PSTN network,
generated revenues in the UK of 1.9bn GBP in 2009.

In the UK, OFCOM provides a wealth of telecom market statististics. Does
anyone on this mailing list know of similar sources of data in other
telecoms markets?

As more voice traffic moves to the IP network, away from the PSTN network,
then there is more opportunity to provide custom routing and advanced
telephony services using VoIP servers.

Manmade Web Limited has written an application, AsterRoute, to extend
Asterisk's functionality to fit it to a predominantly NGIN role.

In 1997 David Isenberg wrote a report about the 'Rise of the Stupid
Network', a network that does nothing but move the bits.

A review of the current state of the 'Stupid Network' is available to
download at www.manmadeweb.co.uk .
