Installed 6.1 on the same machine, now interrupts are 'way' down.. Here's iostat.

Now, it took quite a while longer to build a 6.x kernel, my gosh, about
30 minutes on this 1ghz machine...  6.1 is huge...  Anyway, seems to
be running much better.

you are running revision 37 of the zaptel-bsd drivers, right ? my only suggestion is to try it on freebsd 6.x as that's been the development platform for the drivers. in addition, stuff under the freebsd hood (kernel scheduling for starters) has changed tremendously in the move from 5.x to 6.x, and you're bound to see performance jumps.
