OK, after loads of testing and debugging, I all came down to "priorityjumping" being default to no (option_priority_jumping). So much for reading obsolete documentation (o'reillys asterisk book)
MailboxExists DID find the mailbox, but the +101 jump didn't occur due to this "extensions.conf Note: You'll most probably need priorityjumping=yes in the [general] section if you are using Asterik v1.2.x.
