911 centers use special lines to connect to the public network either
analog/T1 CAMA trunks or digital PRIs

I took a quick look at the new chan_zap.c from the CVS.
The implementation seems to be of the analog CAMA trunk kind.
CAMA trunks transmit the ANI (more or less Caller ID) as a formatted MF tone
string to the 911 equipment.
This way * is capable of being connected directly to a CAMA trunk into a 911
center providing ANI information.
Interesting application.

It stands for "Ehanced 911" i belive it is the protocol for providing
the phones location to emergency services.
