Hello asterisk-dev,

How hard would it be to put 16kHz codec support into asterisk? I mean full support -- voice mail, prompts, etc all in 16kHz. I have a SIP phone that supports G.722, but it always falls back to G.711 when talking to asterisk. It would be nice to take advantage of the full voice quality! My cursory browsing of the source code seems to indicate that the design may be centered around an 8kHz sample rate though -- not surprising, given the telephony orientation.

I've seen several products announced recently that use G.722 over sip (3Com, Alcatel, the new Grandstream 102D), so this would be nice to support with asterisk. So far, I'm using mine with Ser, but voicemail, ivr, etc. would be nice!

Cheers -- Don.
