No sure. But due to lack of good suggestions, I'd give you the sanity
checks:
* is the directory writable?
* Does 'touch config.status' work?
* Any chance you're out of free disk space? df .
Also: what platform is it? E.g: what linux distro? Any special build
system modifications?
