Hello everyone! As you may or may not be aware, today is the feature free reminder [1] for the next version of Asterisk. This is a notice that Asterisk 14 will be feature frozen on July 20th, 2016. Having the branch be feature frozen gives the Asterisk Developer Community time to test out the new features and improvements that have been made to master since the last major release, Asterisk 13.
"But wait," you may ask yourself. "What does 'feature freeze' even mean if we are adding new features to Asterisk 13?" Good question! On July 20th, the Asterisk team will create the Asterisk 14 branch, along with a branch specifically for the first release of Asterisk 14, 14.0.0. As new features are developed, they can be proposed both for Asterisk 13 as well as for the Asterisk 14 mainline branch, subject to the 'you must have tests for release branches' policy [2]. Meanwhile, the Asterisk 14.0.0 branch will remain frozen, and the first beta/release candidates will be cut from it. When Asterisk 14.1.0 is released, it will contain any minor new features or improvements that were made in the meantime and were merged into the Asterisk 14 mainline branch. This policy balances the need to test out the new changes in master in a version that is not a moving target, while allowing the Asterisk Developer Community to continue to improve and enhance Asterisk.
