Instead of jumping into trapping, have you enabled and looked at core debug to understand precisely what is going on first and where it is going awry so that you can then focus on that specific area?

I am doing that at the moment. I have increased the retry timeouts and reduced rhe number of retries to zero to damp down. the noise level.
