Bob, It sounds like you didn't reload Asterisk. There should be an 'Apply Changes' button at the top right of the GUI (next to logout). Or you can go into the CLI and do "reload". This won't drop any calls or anything, it just has Asterisk reload (hence the command) all the changes in the conf files that have been recently made.
