Bob, 
Having it as something you could hear is technically possible, but not going to 
happen. It would require a java or flash based soft phone that would register 
to your asterisk box and make the call. And that would be too much overhead for 
such a feature and against the philosophies of the GUI. 
Now as for a 'Dial Tone Detected' message, we might could work out something 
near that. I'll ask around for implementation ideas and get back with you if 
any look promising.

How hard would it be to have a button say, on the hardware screen or 
where ever it makes sense, that would check for a dial tone. Either 
something you can hear or just a message that said, "Dial tone 
detected"?
