[asterisk-ss7] Turning up A-Links

I'm looking for a simple description of the series of steps that are necessary in 
asterisk-trunk to get to the point where the A-links are turned up. What series of 
steps gets to that point, and how do I look at the status of the A-links in Asterisk?
