[Asterisk-Users] how asterisk authentic a device, say ATA-186 adapter or Ericsson WebSwtich 100?

I have read through the documentation for how to configure the  software, but have not been able to find how each ATA-186 or other SIP devices being authenticed by the Asterisk softwafre module.  How could the system know the user is valid user or not?  Thanks so much for your help.
