IIRC you were given URLs for all sorts of cheapo PCs. Perhaps you've got an old P90 lying around? Or perhaps someone else has?
Use that! Not vmware! If you're to use vmware, do it the other way around - linux host with vmware windoze guest. This works fine for me on my PC.
