yes, they are the same.  And in the UK, they call it the "hash" key - just to add to the confusion!
 
So I guess the same key means different things depending on where the caller is in the transaction.

I am translating the voice files of voicemail now.  I don't know if the POUND and # are the same key in the telephone's keypad. If they are same, how could we understand the following message:
