Without having said why you want to connect the phone through the computers I have a hard time understanding why you want to do that. As someone else has suggested, either buy IP phones and connect them directly to your LAN or buy analog adapters and use your existing phones.

I don't see the S100U listed on the Digium site as a current product. You can get a bunch of SPA 1001's for under $60 each. If you start getting cards for all of your computers you now have to support the installation and maintenance of those everywhere. Most of the analog adapters support remote administration.

Subject: Phone interface hardware

Hello All,
We are in the process of putting together an asterix
based phone network in our office. The office would
only have a LAN (i.e. no phone cables around). The
users would use soft phones from the PCs (running
linux). We would also like the have the ability to
connect analog phones to these PCs and use these
through asterix. It would be really good if we can
connect these phones through some device connected
to
the USB interface. If not we would like to connect
through a PCI card.

Is that this type of asterisk setup is possible? If
so, what are the hardware that we can use for
connecting analog phones to the PCs (through USB or
PCI)? If this is not possible do you have any
suggestion for alternatives?

We also heard about S100U, a FXO to USB converter.
Do
you think we can use this for what we need? Is that
S100U is reliable product to buy? Most of the mails
we
could see on S100U are older than 2 years. Is this a
currently supported product?

Note once again we need this hardware for providing
an
analog phone interface on a machine that does not
run
asterisk. This phone would need to communicate with
the Asterisk running on a different server.
