I think the key is to just not alter the DID to begin with:
exten => 5551212,1,Dial(IAX2/ttyIAX0)
instead of:
exten => s,1,Dial(IAX2/ttyIAX0)
If you need some kind of pattern matching, then use it, but using "s"
rewrites the DID.
