All attempts failed to clear the problem, and my suspicion is that it is hardware related. I have managed to compile and install cleanly on a Kubuntu box, and I'll use that for the time being. I have abandoned the idea of using my main server for the moment, as I cannot currently afford to take it down for a rebuild.
