I've gotten a cross-over cable (is that a loop-back?) but what is a
pattern test ?

We have also seen this on T1/PRI cards that are about to go south (i.e
fail).
We would also recommend putting a loop-back connector into your Digium
card and running pattern tests to make sure the card is functioning
properly.
