I run * on VIA EPIA M10000 on gentoo. Here is my ~/.asterisk.makeopts:

K6OPT  = -DK6OPT
DEBUG=
ASTVARRUNDIR=$(INSTALL_PREFIX)/var/run/asterisk
PROC=i686

There is not only 1 makefile where you have to define i586.
