I had the /exact/ same problem. Turns out it's the FTP server; in the docs, there are several FTP servers specified as being compatible; proftp is the one I went with, and it fixed it right up. (Note that I was using the default Debian FTP server when it was rebooting, so it's not just a 'doze issue.)
