The best way to set gains would be to use ztmonitor (located in /usr/src/zaptel). Make a call and note your channel number. Run /usr/src/zaptel/ztmonitor <channel number> -v from a telnet session. check to see if your levels are too high or too low and adjust your zapata.conf accordingly. I ended up setting my TX to -4.5 to cut out the choppiness. Regards, Mark.
