NOT recommend using a little USB PIC or Atmel part and writing your

license code... there are companies whose business is this, and
they could
likely get your costs down significantly.
Don't forget that many of us disable USB to free up the interrupts, a
mandatory USB dongle would reduce the number of systems
that are usable with other Digium products!
