Thanks for replying here as well - it looks like the move to 1.2.7.1
(we were running 1.2.4 last night, so i don't think 1.2.6 would help)
has made a difference, but i'm not getting overly excited unless the
rest of the day goes by without issue.

I agree with you though - this is looking to me like some goofy
problem with the hardware, probably the PCI bus.

if we have issues again, the next step will be a server rebuild, and
if we're still having issues after THAT, the server is getting
replaced (i hope).

so far though, 1.2.7.1 has made a difference - i had spoken too soon
in my first post.

thanks to all, and if anyone knows any good tests we could run on the
hardware, please let me know.

This is a very strange problem thank you for the very specific
description you gave, looks like it has to be that server hardware.

Have you tried possibly downgrading to Asterisk 1.2.6? not that I
think it would be the cause, but recompiling Asterisk is a heck of a
lot easier than rebuilding a server.

I would also try swapping out the power supply.
